Project Narrative:

A suburban home originally constructed in the 1970s upon a corner lot in Chesterfield County, had developed significant structural, roof and envelope failures. The owners purchased the home at auction pricing in 2005, and commissioned the architect to provide two additions at opposite ends of the home, provide interior renovation and skillfully address the envelope failures. All while being respectful of the original architecture, yet creating a new home that would be their own.

The original home was of a modern design which achieved notable acclaim in its day. However, it had experienced a rapid decline. Because the home was in serious disrepair, the new owner and architect thoughtfully addressed the shared vision with respect to a limited budget.

A new composition utilizing low maintenance materials and removal of troublesome detailing within the original design was essential, along with the owner’s desire for more light and space. The entire roof and exterior skin was removed. All framing materials were inspected and replaced as necessary. The envelope was restructured and properly sealed and flashed prior to a new skin being attached. All exterior steps, entryways and landscaping were redesigned. The two additions were made at each end providing balance and purpose.

The windows, doors, siding and trim were replaced. Exterior features and materials were introduced which were more compatible with one another.  A new sculpture was created upon the original base.

Jury Comments:

“This is a Modernist house with very nice materials. It’s a very creative solution to a challenging project and tight budget. One juror commented, “I would like this architect to redo my hose” Probably one of the best projects achieved within a tight budget – it could have gone either way, but succeeded well. A good composition with excellent interplay between solid and void, with good use of natural light. The plan is well composed; the portfolio was well prepared. The execution of the handrail did not rise to the level of excellence of the overall project.”
