The University of Richmond’s International Center  is a candidate for Gold Certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Regionally manufactured materials and responsible forest-use products were used in construction. Thermal storage air conditioning and occupancy-controlled lighting will reduce energy consumption by more than 20 percent. Landscaping throughout the site includes native or adaptive plants that require little or no irrigation.

One of the features contributing to LEED points is the roofing. Around the arcade, it is slate, while the flat-roofed portion of the building has an energy-efficient white membrane roof. Also contributing to LEED points are bamboo flooring and an ice-storage HVAC system located in the basement. Construction for the $16.7-million project began in January 2009 and was completed in time for the 2010 fall semester.
