JRGBC - Green Films

Please join the James River Green Building Council on February 25th, 2012 from 11-3:30pm for our first Green Films day, being hosted by the Byrd Theatre in Richmond, VA! Come view three different sustainable films for only a $5 donation! This series is open to the general public, professionals, students and anyone else interested in environmental issues.

Blue Gold: World Water Wars
Filmmaker Sam Bozzo examines the growing battle over control of the global water supply in the documentary Blue Gold: World Water Wars. The film examines how major corporations and financial institutions are buying up territories where large water supplies can be found, the fight to protect the Great Lakes, allegations that one of the world’s most powerful political families is attempting to corner the market on water in Paraguay, and what ordinary citizens can do to keep the water supply free and shared fairly by all. Based on the book by Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke, Blue Gold: World Water Wars was an official selection at the 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Greenlit
Movie people are legendarily liberal and left leaning, particularly when it comes to the environment. Greenlit puts their commitment to the test as filmmaker Miranda Bailey (executive producer of The Squid and the Whale) follows the production of The River Why, starring Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) as it attempts to keep an environmentally friendly set thanks to the supervision of a “green” consultant. What starts off with great enthusiasm quickly devolves in this insightful and hilarious film.

On Coal River
Ed Wiley was a former miner who decided he’d had enough when he learned that contamination from Massey’s mining projects was making water unsafe to drink at a local elementary school — a school attended by his granddaughter. Wiley became part of a local campaign to demand accountability from Massey and enforcement of environmental regulation, as well as a new school located a safe distance from the source of the pollution. Filmmakers Francine Cavanaugh and Adams Wood chronicle this battle between people, government and corporate interests in the documentary On Coal River, which was an official selection at the 2010 Silverdocs Documentary Film Festival.
