We are pleased to announce the presentation and tour of the Colonial Williamsburg Spa and Fitness Center, featuring several local women architects and designers in lead design and management roles.
Join Richmond Women in Design at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 11 for a brief project presentation by Madge Bemiss, Jennifer Wimmer and Martha Culpepper, followed by a tour of the facilities.
In 2007, a 4-star luxury spa and fitness center serving the Williamsburg Inn and the Williamsburg Lodge was completed through adaptive renovations to the former Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s goal was to enhance amenities in the vintage two-building complex to serve the needs of tourists and business travelers. The new spa includes treatment rooms, expansive amenities in all locker rooms, a salon, and fitness areas. An existing sunken garden, pool and other surrounding elements were incorporated into this renovation, which received historic tax credits.
Glavé and Holmes Architecture and Martha Culpepper, Interior Design Services, provided the design for the extensive renovations required to convert these structures into a spa which was one of only nine spas in the United States that Condé Nast Traveler selected for its “2008 Hot List”. This project featured several women architects and designers in lead design and management roles, including Madge Bemiss, Kim Sharp, Jennifer Wimmer, and Martha Culpepper.
Please reply to jnolt@3north.com by Wednesday, September 8 if you plan to attend. We will be organizing carpooling for those who are interested.
