Combinations of Materials [9:00-10:15]

These days, most buildings include multiple exterior materials – brick, steel, glass, stone – and systems, such as curtain walls and EIFS.  Participants will learn how brick performs with other building materials and how to combine them without creating problems. Brick and mortar, steel, block and stone combinations will be discussed.

Energy Efficiency of Masonry Walls [10:30-11:45]

Saving energy is important to every one of the structures we design.  Learn how you can maximize the energy efficiency of the building envelope.  Brick/Masonry walls can achieve R-values over 30, especially when you take its thermal mass into account.  This presentation will provide you with the best insulation strategies for brick walls, a list of common thermal bridges and how to avoid them, and how to deal with the possibility of condensation in these highly efficient walls.

1HSW and 1SD AIA-CES credit
